Oil tycoons Winston & Arani Soosaipillai are reportedly hiding in Dubai after their company collapsed amid fraud claims, potentially facing legal action from the UK and UAE.

Soosaipillai Fugitives Flee to Dubai as UK Seeks Mutual Legal Assistance with UAE Following Oil Empire’s Fall

The spectacular collapse of Prax Group, a once-promising oil trading firm, has triggered a frantic search for its billionaire founders, Winston and Arani Kumar Soosaipillai. The couple are rumoured to have fled to a luxury golf resort in Dubai.

The fallout from Prax’s administration last month has exposed a web of alleged mismanagement, tax dodging exceeding £250 million ($393 million), and what industry insiders describe as a company operating on ‘smoke and mirrors.’

Hundreds of employees are now jobless and unpaid, and five of Prax’s key holding companies have launched legal action against the Soosaipillais, accusing them of financial misconduct.

Winston & Arani Soosaipillai

Winston and Arani Soosaipillais, a British-Tamil couple once celebrated for building Prax from the ground up, have remained conspicuously silent. Sanjeev Kumar Soosaipillai, who largely operates under his middle names, ran the business alongside his wife, Arani, the company’s head of human resources, for 25 years.

A response to a request for comment sent to Winston Soosaipillai’s email revealed an automated message indicating he no longer works for the company.

Prax’s decline was not sudden. Sources within the industry suggest the company had been grappling with liquidity problems for years, propped up by increasingly complex financial structures. A 2022 restructuring brought Oatlands and Woodside Trusts - structures typically used for concealing beneficiaries and avoiding taxes – into the picture as 10% shareholders.

Adding to the scrutiny, Prax’s auditors, Deloitte, seconded a partner in 2023 as part of what was officially termed "Project King," but internally nicknamed "Cash Is King.” This move, intended for simplification and cost-cutting, ended abruptly when Deloitte was fired over disagreements with management.

The Soosaipillais: Luxury Living Amidst Financial Ruin

As Prax’s operations faltered, the Soosaipillais reportedly maintained a lavish lifestyle. Records show they purchased a second multimillion-pound mansion in the exclusive St George’s Hill area of the United Kingdom, funded by approximately £11.5 million ($15.2 million) reportedly extracted from the company through salaries and dividends.

A New Era of Bilateral Cooperation Between London and Dubai

The prospect of Winston and Arani Soosaipillais finding sanctuary in Dubai is far from guaranteed. The deepening relationship between London and Abu Dhabi, coupled with the severe economic consequences of Prax’s collapse, could pave the way for an unprecedented level of cooperation between the two nations.

The criminal investigation into Prax Group’s collapse is ongoing. The question now is whether British and Emirati authorities will work together to ensure that Winston and Arani Soosaipillai face justice for the alleged financial crimes that brought down a once-promising oil empire.
